Why theoretical runtime belongs at the beginning of the design conversation

Why thermal load and theoretical runtime must be resolved before a wine-environment system is selected.

A refrigeration unit is not selected because its brochure capacity appears close to the room’s square footage. A controlled wine environment is a dynamic system. Glass, lighting, occupancy, exposure, bottle mass, adjacent conditions, and the enclosure all influence the actual design load.

Calculating that load is only the beginning. Theoretical runtime helps reveal how the selected system is expected to behave—not just on an average day, but when the environment is under stress. A system that is technically capable of reaching setpoint may still be poorly matched if it must run nearly without pause to remain there.

Runtime affects humidity behavior, noise, equipment life, energy use, and resilience. It is an engineering decision with consequences the collector will live with long after the room is photographed.
